Word Work

Every week we learn 5 new word wall words.  During the week we practice those 5 words during word work. We thought we'd share what we do for word work every day.  Sometimes we don't have a lot of time and we just chant, hula or clap our words. Other days we get to choose how to practice.  Our choices are; invisible writing, gel bag writing, magnetic letters, whiteboards, appletters, sticky letters or wicky sticks.

David Goes to School

Kidblog

Today we had an extra long computer time, in hopes that Mrs. Morrison could set up everyone on Kidblog.  She almost succeeded, all but 5 students were set up.  Mrs. Morrison will make sure that they get set up next week.  Kidblog is like an online journal for us.  We can write at school AND at home if we want to.  Everyone has a YELLOW sheet that explains how to get to Kidblog.  Please take a look at our blogs by clicking on "Individual Student Blogs."  We can also leave comments for our friends.

Community Read

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning we invite our parents, grandparents and siblings in to read with us for 15 minutes.  It is a great way to start our day and we all enjoy reading with who ever joins us.

We've been in Grade One for 50 days!

On Monday, we reached 50 days in grade one.

(We forgot to post this last night, oops!)

Run Across Canada

Every Monday and Friday afternoon we participate in Run Across Canada with the other grade ones in our school, Ms. Lirenman's and Mrs. Atkinson's classes.  We all meet outside our classroom door and then walk to our big field, once everyone is ready we run around the perimeter of the field.  Then we walk over to our soccer field and run around the perimeter of that field.  Then we finished by walking the perimeter of the school yard; around the playground, past the intermediate classrooms (very quiet - it is a NO TALKING zone), around the back of the school and back to our rooms.  Mrs. Atkinson keeps track of how many kilometres we are running each day and maps it on a map of Canada for us to see how far we've run.

 A great day for a run.  The weatherman forecasted rain late in the afternoon, we are glad it stayed dry for us.  We run RAIN or SHINE!

Reading Strategy

Two of our guided reading groups have been learning about "Recap the Elephant" and using his strategy when reading.  It is important to understand and remember what you read.  Recap teaches us to retell the important parts of the story in our own words.  Who were the characters?  What was the setting? What happened in the beginning, middle and end of the book?
