We are moving along in our grade one program and already starting to think about second term report cards. We are about half way through another school year and I feel like only yesterday I was meeting my new class in September.

Cancelled Field Trip
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the dairy farm has had to cancel our field trip scheduled for Wednesday, February 4th. We are working to reschedule another date with the farm and will let you know when we have one. Thank you for your understanding.
Valentines Day
We will be making Valentine’s Day card holders at school and celebrating Valentines Day on Friday, February 13. If your child chooses to make valentines at home for his or her classmates please make sure that there is one for each student. I will send home a list of the names the week before Valentines Day.
Student Led Conferences
On Thursday, February 19 our class will be having student led conferences from 1:30 - 3:00. This will be an opportunity for you to come in and have your child be a leader and show you what they have been learning. We hope you can make it!

We started our home reading program last Friday and it is off to a great start. I would like to remind you that books are to come back and forth to school in the book bag. Kid of the Week
We will be starting Kid of the Week October 20. Each student will get a chance to be the “kid of the week.” During this time we can get to know each student much better. When it is their chance your child will bring home a letter to let you know. They will then need to bring a set of clothing to go on their life-sized mural, and a few special items.

Gym - Mondays with Ms. Oskam’s Class and Thursdays by ourselves.
Run Across Canada - Tuesdays and Fridays (we do Run Across Canada rain or shine, so dress appropriately. Rainboots, waterproof coats with hoods and umbrellas are strongly suggested during the fall/winter/spring months.)
Halloween Howl
On Friday, October 31 the primary students will all take place in the annual primary Halloween Howl. There will be more information about that closer to the date.
Math
We have been working on patterning in math. Ask your child to find and show you patterns that they can see in their environment or at home.
Social Studies
In social studies we have been focusing on school and classroom rules. We will continue to use these topics as a theme as well as discuss rules and responsibilities.

Environmental Extravaganza
We have started our Environmental Extravaganza. Our science table has been transformed into a nature table with a live plant, seashells, a birds nest, and different cones and seeds to study. We had our first creature corner creature which was the Pacific Tree Frog and we are currently working on our second. Environmental Extravaganza
Our class will be taking part in Surrey's Environmental Extravaganza from Earth Day (April 22) to World Ocean Day (June 8). As part of the “Extravaganza in the Classroom” our science table will be transformed into a nature table where we can explore and investigate elements of nature that have been brought into the classroom. We will have weekly “creature corner” creatures that student will guess with a series of clues. We will be trying to take our learning outside during story time or art. Report Cards and Parent-Teacher Interviews
Report cards will be going home Monday, March 10. Please take the time to read the report card with your child and then sign and return it to school. We will have early dismissal on Wednesday, March 12 for parent-teacher interviews. If you wish to schedule a meeting to discuss your child please call the school office to make an appointment. If Wednesday doesn’t work for you and you would like to talk with me, please see me and we can arrange another day and time.
We Create Change
The grade seven leadership students are fundraising to build a school for children in less fortunate countries as part of the Free the Children campaign. Between
March 3-14 they are asking students to bring in any loose changes (nickels, dimes, quarter, loonies and twoonies) and drop it into the house shaped piggy banks in their classroom. $20 = 1 brick for a school. There are posters up around the school if you’d like more information.

We have been working hard on addition and subtraction in math. The students have a good grasp on the concept. We’ve been learning and using many strategies such as; drawing a picture, using fingers, counting on and back with a number line, doubles, doubles +1, making ten, using 10 frames and double 10 frames. It would be a great idea to practice addition and subtraction with numbers to 20 at home! After Spring Break we will move onto measurement.

Bonaccord Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympics begin in Sochi, Russia on February 7th. On Thursday, February 6 Bonaccord will be having its own Winter Olympics, complete with Opening Ceremony. Each class has been given a country to represent. (We choose from the top 22 countries from the 2010 Olympics.) Our class will be representing Switzerland. We need to wear red and white on Thursday, February 6th as those are the flag colours of Switzerland. We will be learning a little bit about Switzerland during the week leading up to the Olympics.
One Hundred Day
On Wednesday, February 12 we will celebrating 100 Day! We have been stamping the dots on ten frames and have been looking forward to this day. The day will include many math and literacy activities all around 100! The week before I will being sending information about collecting 100 items to bring to school in a plastic bag.

Parent-teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday, December 11th. If you would like to arrange a meeting, please call the office to set up a time. If the 11th does not work for you please see me personally and we can arrange another day and time.
Christmas Concert (The Nutcracker)
The primary Christmas concert will take place on Wednesday, December 18. There will be an afternoon performance (1 pm) and an evening performance (7pm). There will be a school newsletter with more information going out. We have been given the part of the Russian Dancers. Students will need to wear white pants and shirts. We are also looking for white aprons, wooden spoon and cookie tins. We will be making chef hats at school. The students all received a copy of the lyrics which they can practice at home.

We’ve really been enjoying reading Marty McGuire by Kate Messner. We’ve been connecting with 5 other classes via Google Hangout to read a chapter on Thursdays. We are very excited to talk with the author via Skype in early November.

I’m continuing to assess the needs of the students and I’m really happy to see the knowledge of numbers already. Our focus in math for the next couple of months will be number sense. This term we will be looking at numbers represented by an arrangement of dots, counting sets and representing and describing numbers to 20.

Kid of the Week
We will be starting Kid of the Week October 7. Each student will get a chance to be the “kid of the week.” During this time we can get to know each student much better. When it is their chance your child will bring home a letter to let you know. They will then need to bring a set of clothing to go on their life-sized mural, and a few special items.

Field trip to the Pumpkin Patch
On Monday, October 28 the grade ones will all be going to the Pumpkin Patch. There will be a permission form sent home in the next couple of weeks.
Halloween Howl
On Wednesday, October 31 the primary students will all take place in the annual primary Halloween Howl. There will be more information about that closer to the date.
Global Read Aloud
This year our class is taking part in a global read aloud project. We will be reading the chapter book Marty McGuire by Kate Messner along with many other classes across North America and farther aboard. We will be connecting with other classes within Surrey and some in other parts of Canada and the United States as we read, share and discuss the book.
Math
We have been working on patterning in math and will move on to sorting in October. Ask your child to find and show you patterns that they can see in their environment.
Social Studies
In social studies we have been focusing on school and classroom rules. We will continue to use these topics as a theme in October as well as discuss rules and responsibilities.

Gingerbread Adventure
Last week we met with Ms. Lirenman and Mrs. Atkinson’s class and had a “Google Hangout” with two other grade one classes in Surrey over the internet. We listened to one of their teachers read the story of the Gingerbread Boy. We are hoping to do some shared activities this month and meet with them on Tuesday, December 18. Our home reading program is off to a great start. I would like to remind you that books are to come back and forth to school in the ziploc bag. You may also choose to read books from home or the public library as well, not just the book in the book bag, and you are encourage to read on the weekends, too! Also remember we are counting NIGHTS of reading, not the number of books.

Kid of the Week
We will be starting Kid of the Week October 12. Each student will get a chance to be the “kid of the week.” During this time we can get to know each student much better. When it is their chance your child will bring home a letter to let you know. They will then need to bring a set of clothing to go on their life-sized mural, and a few special items.

Gym - Mondays and Thursdays with Ms. Lirenman’s Class and Wednesdays with Ms. Williams’ Class. Ms. Lirenman and myself have teamed up this year so that our classes can get double the normal gym time.
Run Across Canada - Mondays and Fridays (we do Run Across Canada rain or shine, so dress appropriately. Rainboots, waterproof coats with hoods and umbrellas are strongly suggested during the fall/winter/spring months.)
Math
We have been working on patterning in math and will move on to sorting in October. Ask your child to find and show you patterns that they can see in their environment.
Social Studies
We are finishing up our unit on School and Classroom Rules.
Science
This month we will begin our unit on Force and Motion.

We are in the final month of kindergarten. WOW! We are working on wrapping up the kindergarten program this month and making sure that we’re all ready for grade one in September.

Games Day
Students will be given a team colour to wear for Games Day which will take place on Friday, June 15. I will post the list in our window early next week letting you know the team colours. Parents are welcome to attend Games Day and watch the activities that will take place in the morning and stay for the tug-of-war and races after lunch. The PAC is also offering a complementary Hot Lunch on Games Day. You must return the completed form for your child receive their pizza lunch.
Home Reading Program
Just a reminder: You may choose to read books from home or the public library as well, not just the book in the book bag, and you are encourage to read on the weekends, too! In April will will begin to study “living things.” We will start with oviparous animals (animals that hatch from an egg) and non-oviparous animals. Our big theme will be eggs of course with Easter approaching.
Social Studies
In social studies we will learn about the environment. Earth Day falls on April 22. I would like to do a special project using recycled materials with the students. If you could please send a EMPTY and CLEAN 4L milk jug or 2L milk carton to school by April 16 that would be great.

Well it is almost Spring Break, where has the time gone? It feels like just yesterday it was September. February was a short month, but packed full of activities and learning. We celebrated Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Hundred’s Day, and Anti-Bully Day. Thank you to all those parents that were able to make it out to watch our folk dances.

Dear Parents/Guardians:
We have had a great start to the new year in our class! The first week back to school, all the students came back refreshed and ready. We welcomed our new principal, Ms. McFarlane to Bonaccord. She visited our class a couple of times during the first week to meet the students. We had a lot of excitement with our first snowfall of the year and the students started going outside for recess with the rest of the school. We celebrated Chinese New Year and learned about dragons. We participated in Winter Fest and Fit Kids at the end of January.

We will be making Valentine’s Day card holders at school with our big buddies and celebrating Valentines Day on Tuesday, February 14. If your child chooses to make valentines at home for his or her classmates please make sure that there is one for each student. I will send home a list of the names the week before Valentines Day.

On Friday, February 17 we will celebrate being in kindergarten for 100 days! We have been stamping the dots on ten frames and have been looking forward to this day for quite sometime. (Since we reach 50 days the students have been getting more and more excited). The day will include many math and literacy activities all around 100! The week before I will being sending information about collecting 100 items to bring to school in a plastic bag.

Goal for the month of February
To transition quickly and quietly. I have noticed that some students have decided that when it is time to clean up, it is time to chat with their friends or continue to have center time. This month we will work on entering the classroom and hanging up our coats and backpacks and handing in any materials that need to be handed in quickly, so that we can get started with our morning routines quickly. We will also work on cleaning up quickly and quietly after center time and at the end of the day.

We are almost finished our “I am Unique” unit. I have enjoyed learning about each child and seeing their special things they brought from home. My favourite part has been hearing each of them recite the “I am Special” poem all by themselves at the end of their sharing time.

This month we will learn about reindeer in science. We will be comparing reindeer to bears, which we learned about in November.

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
Thank you to those parents that accompanied us to the pumpkin patch in October. It was a wonderful field trip and the students enjoyed it so much.

In math we have been counting to 10 and working on 1 to 1 correspondence to 10. This means that we count up to 10 objects and touch and move each object as we say the number. We have also been working on patterning and sorting. We know that we can sort things by colour, shape, and size. Some of us have even found more ways to sort.
Social Studies
In socials studies we have been talking about responsibilities and manners. We have created classroom jobs and everyone is responsible for a job at the end of the day. We also have other responsibilities in the classroom such as following the rules.
Science
This month we will learn about bears in science.
