January was an exciting start to the new year! We had our first snowfall of the year and the snow lasted almost a week! We celebrated Chinese New Year and learned about dragons. We participated in Winter Fest and Fit Kids. We started our home reading program. We made snowflakes and dragon puppet with our big buddies. We saw a penguin show put on by the grade one's.

Winter Fest
Today we celebrated Winter Fest. It is a school tradition that the primary students (K-3) do every year around this time. If you remember the Halloween Howl, it is very much like that but without halloween costumes. Each primary class takes turn going to the gym to compete in the relay races. We spent the afternoon in the gym with 3 other classes (a grade 3 class, a grade 2 class and Ms. Baldry's K/1's that we've mentioned before). It was so much fun! There are 8 events to compete in.
1.) Snowshoe Race (with the help of a partner you have to walk with the paper snowshoes from one end to another)
2.) Sleigh Ride (sitting backwards on a potato sack two other team mates pull you from one end to another)
3.) Snowballs Through Tunnels (students pass a "snowball" aka volleyball through the legs of the team)
4.) Snowball Toss (toss a wiffle ball into the snowman's hat)
5.) Knock the Penguin Off (toss a wiffle ball at the penguin on the iceberg)
6.) Snowboard Ride (students ride on their stomachs on the roller board and pick up a marshmallow and return back to their team)
7.) Biathlon (students "ski" with J-clothes, then drop to their stomach and try to throw 3 beanbags into a milk crate)
8.) Hockey Finale (the students take turns shooting on nets with the teachers as goalies)
Mrs. Morrison tried to get as many pictures as she could but she was also busy setting up equipment for the relays.

Gung Hay Fat Choy
Happy Chinese New Year! Today we celebrated Chinese New Year at school. Our letter of the week was Ff for fireworks and festival. We came up with a long list of words that started with Ff. Here it is...
As you know, this year is the year of the dragon. We learned a new poem called Chinese Dragon.
Chinese Dragon

After recess we made some great fireworks using black construction paper, glue and glitter. Mrs. Morrison will be sure to post photos of them tomorrow once they are dried and displayed.
In the afternoon, we got to play a Chinese New Year letter game, do a ribbon dance and read a book about Chinese New Year.

Spirit Day
Today was Spirit Day at our school. We dressed in blue and yellow because those are our school colours. Here are a couple of pictures of some of us waiting to go to the library showing our school spirit!
We also made dragon puppets today. Our grade seven big buddies helped us to colour and cut out the pieces to make our dragon and then glue it to the paper bag. We were all very excited to take then home and show them to our parents.

Today we all wrote dragon poems. First, we had to brainstorm together all the things that dragon can and cannot do. These are the things we thought dragons could do...

- get angry
- eat people
- see above the clouds
- fly around the world in 5 seconds (If you are familiar with Robert Munsch's The Paper Bag Princess you will know where we got this idea from.)

Dragons!
This week our letter of the week is Dd. Dd is for DRAGON! With Chinese New Year approaching next Monday and it being the year of the dragon, I thought it would be very appropriate to focus on dragons this week. We started our morning by brainstorming words that begin with Dd (We do this every Monday morning for our new letter of the week). The students came up with a very impressive list (They come up with these words all on their own). Here is our list...

Shake and Spill
On Friday we learned a fun math game called Shake and Spill! In partners, we each received a mini whiteboard, a marker and 10 two-sided counters in a ziploc bag. We took turns SHAKING the bag and SPILLING the counters. We counted and recorded the number of red counters and yellow counters showing.

Frosty the Snow-Glyph
Today we worked very hard during math to create Frosty the Snow-Glyph. What is a glyph you ask? A glyph is a picture that gives information about the person who made it.
First, we had to answer four questions to get the legend for our individual glyphs. Each part of frosty tells something about us. The mittens tell how much you like snow. Polka-dotted mittens means you like snow a lot and striped mittens mean you like snow a little bit. The hat tells what your favourite thing to make in the snow is. A top hat means you like to make snowmen, a hat with a pom-pom means you like to make snowballs and a sun hat means you like to make snow forts. The scarf tells what winter sport you like most. A plain scarf means you like sledding, a striped scarf means you like ice-skating and a polka-dotted scarf means you like skiing. What frosty is holding in his hand tells whether you would like to get more snow where you live or not. A broom means you would like to get more snow where you live and a shovel means you would not like to get more snow where you live.

New Dances
Today, during our gym time with Ms. Baldry's Grade Ones and Kindergartens we learned two new dances. The first one was called Seven Jumps. It was lots of fun! The second one was KinderPolka. It was more difficult, but we were starting to get the hang of it. With a little more practice we'll be great. We are going to continue to learn folk dances during our gym time with Ms. Baldry's class and we are also doubling up with Mrs. LaRiviere's Kindergarten class. All three classes will work together to learn folk dances until Spring Break.

A Day of Firsts
Today we had many firsts in our class!
It was the first day that the Kindergarteners went outside for recess with the rest of the school. They did so well! Everyone made it back to the classroom when the bell rang without any problems.
It was also the first day of our home reading program. We finally got the answer to why our names were on the pockets on the door. We got to choose books from the special book cart in the hallway and then put the book card inside the pocket with our name. There is more information about the home reading program under one of the tabs listed above.
It was also the first day for FIN to go on a sleepover with a student in the class. Fin is a special friend in our class, that students will take turns taking home and writing about in Fin's special journal.
