More Measuring

We were very busy uploading work to our kidblogs today.  During math we found something in the classroom to measure and then took a photo of it.  Then we opened it in Draw & Tell and wrote and told about what we measured.  Here are a couple samples, but check out our individual blogs for more.

The Mixed Up Chameleon

Today we read the Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle.  If you are unfamiliar with the story click here to listen to a reading of the Mixed Up Chameleon.  It is about a chameleon who wishes to be a whole bunch of animals for different reasons.  We created our own versions of animals we might want to be and why.  Here are a couple examples but head over to our individual blogs to see more.

Frogs

We have started learning about frogs. On Friday we made a frog glyph with our big buddies.  In case you don't know what a glyph is, it is a picture that tells information about the person who made it.  Everyone had to answer 3 questions before starting and that determined what their frog would look like.
If you were a boy your frog would be sitting and if you were a girl your frog would be jumping.
The number of spots corresponded to your age.
If you liked frogs your eyes would be looking forward and if you did not like frogs your eyes would be crossed.

I can tell that the frog on the left was made by a boy who likes frogs and is 6 years old.  The frog on the right was made by a girl who likes frogs and is 7 years old.

What can you tell about the students who made these 3 glyphs?

Measurement

As you know we have started working on measurement in math.  On Friday, we created a ramp and raced 3 toy cars down it.  Then, we measured their distance using straws.  Next, we recorded the distances, which car went the longest distance, which car went the shortest distance, and ordered them from greatest to least distance.

Skype Call

On Friday morning we went to the library with the two other grade one classes in our school.  Our librarian had arranged a skype call with an author named Ame Dyckman.  Ame talked to us about books and read us some books.  Afterward, we got to ask her some questions.  

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

Today during Author Study we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle.  After reading the story everyone re-created their own version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear using the Draw & Tell app on the iPad.

Measurement

Since coming back from Spring Break we have started learning about measurement.  So far we have only been measuring with non-standard units such as snap cubes or crayons.  Yesterday we  were given the task to estimate and measure 4 students in the classroom.  Our unit of measure was a crayon.  We first needed to estimate how many crayons tall the student would be and then actually measure them.  It turned out to be difficult for some students because we had to remember to use our finger as a marker before moving the crayon along in order to get an accurate measurement.  Here are some photos of us measuring our friends.
