Here are some photos of how our recycled art project turned out.

Egg Drop Preparations

Last week with our big buddies we thought of a design for a device in which we could drop an egg off the roof in and have the egg survive the fall.  We decided on the materials we would need and brought items from home.  Today we created the contraptions with our big buddies.  The eggs are all packed tightly into the devices and we will drop them next Friday.  Who's will break? Who's will survive?

Everything Old Is New Again

Earth Day is on Sunday, April 22!  We have been discussing our environment and what we can do to protect it.  We talked about putting our trash in the trash and recycling.  We decided to create an art project using only recycled materials.  Here are a few pictures of us creating...

Egg Experiments

As you know, we have been focusing on eggs for the past two weeks. We were learning about oviparous animals (animals that hatch from eggs).  We decided to do two experiments with eggs.  In the first experiment, we took 3 hard boiled eggs and placed one in a glass of water, one is a glass of apple juice and one in a glass of coca-cola.  We made prediction about what might happen to the eggs.  Some thought the eggs might crack, some thought they would change colour, and some thought they might explode.  We left them for 24 hours and checked them the next day.  This is what we found...

After examining the eggs we talked about the importance of brushing our teeth.

In our second experiment, we placed a raw egg into a glass of vinegar and left it for 24 hours.  We again made predictions about what would happen.  Some thought nothing would happen, some thought the vinegar might evaporate and some thought it might crack.  When we checked it this is what we found.

What we found appeared to be a "rubber" egg. It was very soft and squishy.  The vinegar reacts with the calcium of the egg shell and forms a gas which makes it appear like a rubber egg.  It is very similar to the egg laid by reptiles.

That bucket of eggs again...

Today, we passed around the blue bucket filled with eggs again.  When we opened them today we found letters inside.  Each student's name was in an egg.  First, we had to find the uppercase letter because that is the first letter in a name.  Then, we could determine who's name it was and spell out the rest of the name.  Some of us were able to see the name just by looking at the letters.

Chicken's Aren't the Only Ones

Yesterday, we told you about reading Chicken's Aren't the Only Ones.  We made a list of animals that hatched from eggs and today we finished our project.  We each chose one animal to create.  After school Mrs. Morrison put the display together.  Check it out!
